Huck-Godfrey Presser
Marco Huck’s WBO Cruiserweight Title Fight against Matt Godfrey will be special for more reasons than just one. The hard-hitting 25-year-old (29-1, 22 KOs) will make the fourth defense of his title on Saturday night in Erfurt, Germany, which will mark the 100th broadcast of a Sauerland show on German public TV giants ARD. He also needs a victory to book his place in the Cruiserweight Super Six, which Wilfried and Kalle Sauerland are hoping to finalize in the next weeks.
“There is a lot at stake this time out,” Huck said. “I want to put on a special performance for the millions who are watching on German TV and all over the world.” Huck claimed he is not thinking about the potential Super Six series – yet. “It has crossed my mind because such an idea would be a great thing for the exciting cruiserweight division but right now all my focus is on Matt Godfrey,” he added. “I will knock him out.”
Godfrey (20-1, 10 KOs) is confident he can spoil the big party on Saturday night. “I am here to win this fight,” he said at today´s press conference. “I want to thank Team Sauerland for giving me the chance to come over and take the title. They have picked the wrong opponent. I am no Brian Minto or Adam Richards – Huck has never been in the ring with someone like me and I will be doing things he has never seen before. I will bring home the title.”
Added his promoter Jimmy Burchfield: “Matt is coming off the best camp of his career. We had to send home five sparring partners, including two heavyweights, because he knocked them all out. We are ready and we will take the title on Saturday night.”
Wilfried Sauerland joked he did not know that there were any American heavyweights left. “Marco is in top shape and I am sure he will crown our 100th ARD broadcast with a big victory,” the Hall of Fame Promoter said. “Godfrey is a tough guy and he moves very well, but Marco will eventually track him down. He needs a victory so that we can finalize the Super Six tournament in the cruiserweight division which hopefully will begin at the end of this year. But first things first – Marco should not look past Godfrey who is a strong opponent.”
Huck-Godfrey Workouts in Germany (Picture Credit: Team Sauerland) WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco “Captain” Huck (29-1, 22 KOs) and challenger Matt Godfrey (20-1, 10 KOs) today participated in an open media work-out in front of more than 500 fans in Erfurt, Germany.
Captain Huck is determined to defend his title for a fourth time on Saturday night. “My fans love my aggressiveness and explosiveness and I will make sure Matt Godfreywill get a good taste of it,” Huck said. “I am just too explosive for him. The belt stays in Germany. I want to put on another spectacular performance and defeat Godfrey in style.”
Even though Godfrey has left Ulli Wegner guessing in what stance he will fight, the German star coach said it does not matter. “I have prepared Marco for both a southpaw as well as an orthodox stance,” he stated. “Even if Godfrey intends to switch, it will not be a problem. Marco has worked hard in practice. If he listens to his corner, he will defend his title with another great victory.”
Meanwhile, Godfrey believes it will be him who leaves the ring victorious. “I might not have the hardest punch, but I am smarter than Huck,” he said during today´s session. “He’s a big strong guy and a very good puncher. He’s a little limited in some of the things he can do, but he’s very consistent in a lot of the things he does do. He’s a champion for a reason. He didn’t get 29 wins and 22 knockouts by accident. We have a big task on our hands, but we had a great camp to prepare for it. It will be a great fight. ”

PROVIDENCE --- If Matt Godfrey plans to win the biggest fight of his pro career, he’s going to have to return to the scene of his only defeat in order to grab it.
The talented 29-year-old cruiserweight from Providence will vie for a world championship a week from Saturday when he flies to Thurigen, Germany to battle defending WBO (World Boxing Organization) champion Marco Huck of Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany for his title belt.
Godfrey, who is 20-1 (10 KOs), suffered his setback back on March 3, 2008 in a WBC (World Boxing Council) title eliminator in Nordrhein-Westfalen to hometown hero Rudolf Kraj, who earned a 12-round unanimous-decision victory by scores of 117-111, 115-113, and 116-113.
That loss, which most boxing enthusiasts felt was a “hometown call” by the judges, left a sour taste with Godfrey’s camp, but that’s all ancient history to Godfrey, who is anxiously awaiting his return to Europe. (More)
Captain Huck warming up for Godfrey
in German heat
WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco “Captain” Huck (29-1, 22 KOs) caught up with the German media yesterday as he continues his preparation for his clash with Matt Godfrey (20-1, 10 KOs). The duo will battle it out in Erfurt on August 21, which will be Huck´s fourth title defense. “Despite the hot weather in Germany we have been working really hard in practice,” Huck said. “My trainer Ulli Wegner has scheduled a lot of exhausting sessions. Fighting in Erfurt will be special for him because he lived there for a long time. So I intend to put on a spectacular performance on August 21 to please him and of course my fans all over the world. Godfrey is a tough challenger, but he has never been inside the ring with someone like me. I am the best cruiserweight in the world and I am keen to prove it once again.”
Huck and Wegner have been working out at Team Sauerland´s headquarters in Berlin. The Max-Schmeling-Gym is located right next to the Olympic Stadium. At the end of the month, they will move camp to Kienbaum, 20 miles east of the capital. “My fighters know that I am a very demanding coach,” Wegner said. “Marco is doing very well in practice. He does what I ask of him. He is willing to learn and to improve. He is such an explosive and powerful fighter, but there are still some parts of the game where he can get better. We are working on that and are already looking forward to August 21.”

Training Camp Notes
PROVIDENCE (July 13, 2010) – Cruiserweight contender Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey (20-1, 10 KOs) challenges World Boxing Organization champion Marco “Kapt’n” Huck (29-1, 22 KOs) on August 21 in Thuringen, Germany
A former U.S. amateur
star, the 29-year-old Godfrey from Providence has been training in his native Rhode Island and nearby Connecticut for the last seven months
in preparation for his first world title shot. Matt originally was supposed to fight Steve Cunningham last March for the vacant IBF title, but a series of date changes and miscommunications led to that fight being canceled. Matt took a few days off and went right back into training for what turned out to be a showdown with Huck.
Godfrey, rated No. 8 by the WBO and No. 10 by The Ring magazine, is a full-blooded Native American (Wampanoug). He had held a number of regional titles including, NABF, NABA, USNBC, WBA Continental Americas and Sovereign Nations Boxing Council.
Matt’s most notable victories to date have been against Felix Cora, Jr., Danny Batchelor, Shaun George, Shawn Hawk, Ernest Mateen and Jermell Barnes.
Training…..
“Everything has been excellent in camp,” Godfrey said. “I’m excited about fighting Marco Huck for the WBO belt. I’ve been training in a garage (Vernon, CT – owned by his strength-and-conditioning coach, Ross Enamait) for the past seven months, somewhat isolated like in Rocky IV against Drago. It’s in a small town in the middle of Connecticut and I train there with Ross. There’s high altitude and I really like training there. I have everything I need.”
When Godfrey spars or needs serious gym work, it’s usually at Bare Bones Boxing Gym in East Hartford, where his head trainer “Iceman” John Scully, former world light heavyweight title challenger, comes from. Matt also works at Lion’s Den in Middletown (CT), Manfredo’s Gym in Pawtucket (RI) and Big Six Academy in Providence.
Marco Huck…..
“He’s world champion for a reason,” Matt noted. “He’s well conditioned and has a lot of power in both hands. He lacks a strong amateur background and does dome things the wrong way. He doesn’t know, like somebody who boxed a lot as an amateur, that it’s wrong to back-up throwing an uppercut. Some things like that, but he’s been very successful fighting his way, and it’s not easy fighting an awkward fighter like him.”
Fighting in Germany…..
Godfrey’s lone loss as a pro was in 2008 by decision to Rudolf Kraj in a WBC title eliminator held in Germany.
“If you want to be the best in the world,” Godfrey believes, “you have to fight around the world, not just on the East Coast. I need to prove myself to everybody; I have to go over there and take his belt.”

Godfrey took a brief break from training last week to be the in-studio guest for ESPN Friday Night Fights. His promoter, Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc, presented “Let Freedom Ring” at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island, featuring some of Godfrey’s CES stable-mates. Matt received high grades for his TV performance.
